Anniversary Celebration of Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends
Society
|
 |
| In
2008 the Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends Society celebrated
21 years since its formation. |
Friday
26th. and Saturday 27th. September
In
September The Friends celebrated their 21st Anniversary
with events to publicise their support of Ventnor Botanic
Garden. Brian Kidd, President of The Friends, gave a talk
to members on 'Bulbs for All Seasons', followed by the cutting
of the Anniversary Cake and drinks.
In the main public event Alan Titchmarsh, High Sheriff of
the Island, launched a fund for a replacement glasshouse.
It was very fitting that he should launch the fund as exactly
21 years ago he opened the present (now ageing) 'Greenhouse'.

At
the event, donors raised money for the new fund by buying
panes of glass for £10.00 each and their names will be recorded
in a commemorative book. This appeal is continuing as The
Friends aim to raise £250,000. Over £14,000 has already
been put aside for this long-term project.

Other
activities on the day included a plant auction, a silent
auction, tombola, book stall and plant and produce stall.
Finally, the Curator, Simon Goodenough, conducted a walk
around the grounds and pointed out projects for which The
Friends have raised money - amounting to over £72,000 since
the year 2000 when the new Visitor Centre was opened. The
Anniversary celebration raised over £3,000 and was well
attended.
Anyone wishing to contribute money to this worthwhile appeal
please send your donation to Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends
Society, Ventnor Botanic Garden, Undercliff Drive, Ventnor,
Isle of Wight PO38 1UL. Any amount will be most appreciated.
